Removing trim makes no difference

There are no spaces in the field or the key. If I include or exclude Trim it seems to make no difference.

I have tried using negative statements e.g.

If key <> "PUBLISH" then...

but nothing working here. Totally strange

I have the same value for a key string and a key2 string and can see this value as a string type, no spaces and the same in the debugger.

but the code If key = key2 then
returns the else value

Frustrating!!!!
